PLANE #125

Photographer Thomas Eigel’s work is characterized by his focus on elevating his subjects to a near-iconic status. Themes of travel and movement are central to his photography, with his compositions often stripping away complexity to reduce symbols to their essence. This approach creates an ethereal, intangible quality in his images, where his subjects—solitary figures or abstract forms—invite personal interpretation and projection. In his 2012 series Airplane, Eigel captures the moment of an airplane hovering overhead, blending the fascination of flight with the intersection of aesthetics and technology. His work draws attention to the details of aviation, focusing on the materiality of the planes, the power of their engines, and the precision of their design. By presenting these aircraft in neutral, almost weightless spaces, Eigel transforms them into timeless, gravity-defying symbols of the technological age. This series is a meditation on flight as both an aesthetic and a mechanical marvel, turning familiar objects into striking visual icons.

About the Piece

Based in Germany, Thomas Eigel’s work explores the universality of transportation. With a fresh perspective on recognizable forms, from airplanes to shipping containers, Eigel is inspired by how we are connected through mechanics and technology.
