ARCHIVE SPRUCE BASKET

The basket pieces are essentially perspective drawings that describe an everyday object reduced to a very simplified form. Ideas around the depiction of three-dimensional objects within a two-dimensional surface have always interested Michael, the architectural perspective drawing being just one example. In these pieces he uses optical colors and high contrast black and white to challenge the eye while engaging the brain, always questioning how, why, and what we perceive.

About the Piece

A foray into architectural school in the 1980s did not dissuade Michael from a career as an artist. In fact, he still finds himself engaged with many of the concepts and practices of architecture and urban planning. His work is a reflection of these interests and his drawings derive primarily from the processes and old-school tools of architectural drawing melded with a love of contemporary art.

Michael’s work featured on ArtStar is a collaboration with New York based Interior Designer Dan Mazzarini. First introduced 20 years ago during Dan’s time at Ralph Lauren Store Design, they have collaborated on projects across the globe. Both share an affinity for gestural marks and hand-drawn fluidity, a sentiment that is reflected in their first ArtStar collaboration.
