THE PAINTED DESERT 1

For Brian Hubble, art has traditionally involved creating drawings and photo collages. Recently, he's added a new dimension to his work by incorporating photo transfers of images from The Painted Desert and The Badlands. Using a streamlined, cost-effective technique he’s refined over time, Hubble transfers these images and scans the most successful ones. In post-production, he manipulates these scans individually, integrating them into a layered composition. This process is repeated with multiple photographs until the piece reaches its final form. The completed work is then printed on photo paper as a limited edition.

About the Piece

For over two decades, Brian Hubble has been a creative force in Brooklyn, New York, blending traditional and digital techniques in his distinctive art process. By meticulously scanning and manipulating his drawings and photographs, Hubble creates singular images that evolve into cohesive compositions through repeated refinement. This intricate process shapes each piece into a compelling visual narrative. Hubble’s dedication culminated in his acclaimed exhibition at The Museum of the Moving Image, "I Trusted You: Andy Kaufman on the Edge of Performance," a profound exploration of the comedian's legacy developed over 16 years. His innovative spirit also shone at MoMA PS1, where he collaborated with The Bruce High Quality Foundation to produce and distribute postcard-sized screen-printed monochromes from the back of his pickup truck to enthusiastic museum visitors. From 2016 to 2019, Hubble co-founded and directed Unisex Salon, an artist-run gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn, promoting exhibitions for emerging and underrepresented artists. His work has graced the pages of notable publications including Print Magazine, C-Print Journal, and ArtNet. As an editorial artist, his creations have appeared in prestigious outlets like Taschen, The Hill Museum and Manuscript Library, The New York Times, M.I.T. Technology Review, Harvard Law Review, and Harper’s Magazine. Brian Hubble holds an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was awarded the William Merchant R. French Fellowship, and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.
